AlbumsThatRock.com presents: The Top 5 Rock & Metal EPs of 2016

I always liked EPs for their inclusion of unreleased material and rarity character. The year 2016 provided us with another plentitude of great rock and metal EP releases from which I drew the following Top 5 list.

#5 Delain – Lunar Prelude
Dutch melodic metal act Delain has been prolific and very focused in recent years releasing great music, producing worthy live experiences and including their fans through crowdfunding. Lunar Prelude, cleverly named in anticipation for their full-length album Moonbathers released in September 2016, introduced one of my favourite Delain songs to date: Suckerpunch. The 8-track EP comprises live versions of the popular songs from the band’s catalogue as well as unreleased tracks. Great EP!

#4 Prophets of Rage – The Party’s Over
Prophets of Rage – the mash-up of members from Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill – released this wonderful EP that received many positive and negative comments alike. As I have mentioned before here, “For me, this EP feels refreshing and makes me want to hear more Prophets of Rage originals. Maybe it is intended as an introduction to the band. Maybe the supergroup is cooking up a full-length album, I have no idea, but this is definitely a great and enjoyable introduction.”

#3 Ghost – Popestar
Ghost has established themselves as one of the most exciting bands to follow. After the galactic success of their 2015 release Meliora, Ghost released a 5-track EP with a brand-new original tune, “Square Hammer”, accompanied by four cover songs. A great release that carries the torch for Meliora. Very much looking forward to what comes next.

#2 BAND-MAID – Brand New MAID
The five-piece, all-female Japanese rock group BAND-MAID, released their third studio effort this year. Brand New MAID encompasses eight dramatically melodic rock tunes that caught my rock-enthusiast heart with the very first note. One of my favourite tunes across all bands and genres in 2016: “Alone”.

#1 Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons
Phil Campbell, longtime guitar player for Motörhead, needs no introduction. But maybe his new band does. The band surfaced as a cover band at guitarist Todd’s birthday party in 2013. And, Todd is one of Phil’s “Bastard Sons”, the other two being Dane (drums) and Tyla (bass). The line-up is completed by vocalist Neil Starr. Finally, in 2016, the band adopted their name and released this phenomenal 5-track EP and toured Europe. Definitely one of my favourite releases in general this year.
